Previous BEST Projects

A. Arusha Women Outreach
July 2001 – March 2003.

The project was implemented in Arusha and Arumeru districts. The project reached 384 people; most of them are from Arusha Urban and catchments areas of Arumeru District. The project had the goal of reducing poverty to the small scale entrepreneurs. The project core activities were:

  • Provision of business management training to the small scale entrepreneurs
  • Follow up of Business advisory services
  • Gender training
  • Credit facilitation and issuing of micro-credits

B. Local Area Development Strategy (LADS)
April 2003 – 2008 March

The project was funded by Belgium NGO called TRIAS. LADS stand for “Local Area Development Strategy”. LADS project was concerned with the provision of business management skills, gender and development and credit facilitation. In that project BEST has successfully reached 5,275 clients within five years (2003 – 2007). Among the served 5,275 clients, 918 also received micro-business loans from BEST. C. Arumeru Holistic Empowerment
and Development (AHEAD)
May 2003 – February 2007

The project aimed at alleviating poverty to the communities of four villages in Arumeru District. The project was implemented in partnership with four local NGOs namely, BEST, WADEC, WEGCC and VIA VIA. Each NGO had a component to fulfill within that project. BEST had role of providing business management and close follow up of trained clients. The project was in four villages of Arumeru district namely: Nambala, Malula, Kolila and Valeska.

D. Food processing (FOP) Jan – December 2008

Food processing project aims at reducing poverty to the micro-entrepreneurs through provision of trainings on food processing. The project started in January 2008. The trainings on food processing were conducted to eighty clients (80), twenty from each village. The turn up of the participants was positive due to the fact that they identified the project themselves.

Trainings on food processing, preservation and packaging have been conducted. Trainings were mainly on processing of: tomato jam, tomato sauce and paste, mango pickle and nutritious porridge flour, vegetable preservation and milk processing. Trainings on marketing strategies as well as quality products were taught to all.

The food processing clients were from four villages of Nambala and Lemanyatta of Arumeru District and  Baraa/Moshono, Migungani of Arusha District.

The training of trainers (TOT) was taught to twenty participants from the four villages represented by a group of five members each.
